Commando Grog
Three syrups. Two rums. One seriously good drink.
The Commando Grog is a Tiki-style cocktail that layers citrus, spice, and nutty sweetness into something greater than the sum of its parts. Three Quantum Cocktails syrups do the heavy lifting here — Falernum, Orgeat, and Cinnamon Syrup — each adding its own dimension to this tropical powerhouse.
Fair warning: this drink has more ingredients than most on this list, and tracking them all down takes a little extra effort. But once you've got everything assembled, it comes together quickly — and the result is absolutely worth it.
Serves: 1 | Prep Time: 5 minutes
What You'll Need
- 1½ oz grapefruit juice
- ¾ oz fresh lime juice
- ½ oz Quantum Cocktails Falernum
- ½ oz Quantum Cocktails Orgeat
- ½ oz Quantum Cocktails Cinnamon Syrup
- ½ oz Allspice Dram
- 1½ oz OFTD overproof rum (or substitute a standard-proof dark rum for a gentler drink)
- 1½ oz demerara rum (e.g. Hamilton 86)
- Garnish: fresh mint is traditional, but feel free to garnish however you like — Tiki drinks are all about the presentation
How to Make It
- Add all ingredients to a shaker with crushed ice or small ice cubes (the kind from a bag at the grocery store works great).
- Shake well until chilled.
- Pour everything — ice and all — into whatever vessel you like. A hurricane glass, a rocks glass, or your favourite Tiki mug all work beautifully.
- Garnish with fresh mint or whatever strikes your fancy, and serve immediately.
QC Tips
- Pebble ice is ideal if you can get it — it chills fast and gives the drink that classic Tiki texture. Crushed ice from a bag is a great substitute.
- OFTD (Plantation Overproof, 69% ABV) packs a punch — if you're new to overproof rums, swap it for a standard dark rum and you'll still get a fantastic drink.
- Demerara rum has a rich, molasses-forward flavour that anchors the whole cocktail. Hamilton 86 is a great example, but any demerara-style rum will do.
- This drink is complex — don't skip the Allspice Dram. It ties everything together.
